Global Kindle vs. Kindle DX

This post takes a gander at the differences and similarities between the Global Kindle and the Kindle DX.

The most obvious difference between these electronic reading gadgets available for purchase at this time is that just one works in America while the other works in over 100 countries all over the planet. Clearly if you live outside the US (or if you’re a US citizen who frequently travels to other countries) then that makes your decision (such as it is) obvious; You must get the Kindle with Global Wireless.

Besides that very important distinction, the clearest difference between the two is that of their sizes. The Kindle DX Reading Device is larger both as far it’s display and it’s memory capabilities. It is also far larger as far as it’s priceis concerned (as of now the DX costs more than $200 more than the Global Kindle.)

While the DX is 9.7 inches, the Kindle with Global Wireless is just 6 inches. The larger display is most helpful when reading a digital newspaper On the other side, the smaller size of the regular version can make it easier to carry around with you.

There is also a big difference when it comes to memory. The Kindle DX Reading Device can hold over 3000 books, magazines, & newspapers while the smaller version of this wireless reading device can hold approximately 1,500 books. But really, who has more than 1,500 books?! Honestly, I have a very difficult time believing this huge amount of space that the DX has is needed for most potential customers.

Another difference is that the DX has an auto-rotating screen so that if you flip the gadget on it’s side the screen automatically adjusts itself to be read horizontally (and automatically adjusts itself to be read vertically when you flip it back.)The DX also has a built in PDF reader that the smaller version does not have.

Both kindles have access to approximately 350,000 books, magazines, and newspapers which can usually be bought for much lower prices than their paper alternatives.

Both kindles have text to speech software which automatically turns any book into an “audio book.”

Neither of these gadgets have any monthly charges to worry about. The way the wireless service works is a lot like the wireless for a GPS.

Both devices have a very basic built in web browswer that lets you surf the web from anywhere. This web browswer is designed for text based informational websites such as Wikipedia and blogs. It’s not for pictures or videos.

Both digital book readers have a display that has no glare so that it reads like real paper. If you’re concerned that reading this will be similar to reading your computer screen then don’t be! It’s not like that at all.
